BALTIMORE, MD – Students across the country get denied admission by their dream schools every year. Applying to colleges can be difficult when you are not as academically strong in comparison to your peers. The CASA Academy program at Morgan State University gives students an opportunity that most universities do not offer. The registration process for CASA Academy 2023 is live now. The CASA Academy 2023 officially begins on Saturday, June 24th, and ends on Friday, July 28th.

Second Year Experience Coach Derrell Brown says Morgan gives students a second chance, “You apply to schools back home and they were denied admissions, but they had the opportunity to have a second chance to come to Morgan, working with our bridge program CASA Academy.”

Students in the summer CASA program do more than just sit in the classroom for six weeks. They are provided mentors who are graduates of the program, to help the students see their own potential.

Second Year Experience Coach Alkwanzo Burke enjoys everything the program has to offer “So there’s so much more… again they get to see the campus and you know, go to campus they meet other administrators in other departments. It’s really really an excellent program.”

CASA Academy accepts a maximum of 300 students for each summer group. Students are enrolled in non-credit-bearing courses during CASA Academy. The courses are English, Math, Analytical and Critical Reading, and an Orientation course.

The courses are taught by Morgan State University faculty and their freshman academic advisor. Participants who successfully complete CASA Academy by earning a minimum grade of "C" or 70% in all their CASA Academy courses are eligible to gain admission to the University for the subsequent fall semester.

Once the student has successfully completed CASA Academy 2023, they must participate in ACCESS Orientation for freshman students at the end of the summer.

Derrell Brown says CASA preps students before the semester starts by having seminars on financial literacy, networking, and career development.

The purpose of the seminars and events is to help the students beyond their college career. “We have activities throughout the evenings hosted by the strength leaders or the advising staff. So, we have speakers come in, talk about financial literacy, networking, career development pretty much prepping these students before the semester even starts.”
